The RPL_MOTD (372) numeric is part of the Message of the Day (MOTD) reply, and is also sent during the initial registration burst when new users successfully connect to the network. It gives users the content of the MOTD set on the server.

:server 372 <nick> <line>
  • <nick>: Nickname of the connecting user.
  • <line>: Content of this MOTD line.

It’s typical for <line> to start with a dash and a space, as shown in the example(s) below. These lines MAY also be wrapped to 80 characters by the server, though clients MUST be able to handle MOTD lines of any size up to the maximum IRC line length. In addition, <line> MAY contain formatting codes.
